In his last days as Principal of Moore Theological College Dr John Woodhouse has joined his successor Dr Mark Thompson in strongly endorsing Canon Rick Smith as our next Archbishop.
Dr Woodhouse says ‘in Rick Smith we have a man whose theological understanding reflects what I’d like to call the heart of this wonderful diocese of Sydney.’
Dr Woodhouse says we can have full confidence in Mr Smith’s understanding of God’s word, his understanding of the gospel and his priorities.
Dr Thompson, who will take up his appointment as Principal of Moore College this Thursday, says Mr Smith will be able to represent the Sydney Diocese well as we negotiate our sometimes complicated relationship with the National Church.
Dr Thompson, Mr Smith and other leaders from Sydney are just back from several days of negotiation with a group from the National Church’s General Synod about major issues of difference.
Dr Woodhouse says ‘I am perfectly confident that Rick is a leader who will lead on the national stage as well as the Sydney stage. He’s a very able person, but it’s even more important in what he’s leading in. My confidence in his theological vision and his understanding of God’s word and that he’s representing what the diocese as a whole wants to be represented. That’s actually more important…’
The Principals join the Deans of Sydney, Parramatta and Wollongong and many members of the Diocesan Standing Committee and Mission Board in supporting Mr Smith.
