the United Church of Christ have just launched a new ad campaign “God is still speaking, – never place a period where God has placed a comma”.
It’s a fascinating approach to liberal theology and, first of all, it’s well worth going to see. Here’s an organisation that has thought hard about how to present it’s case.
But, then we turn to the case in hand.
First, is God “still speaking”?
Well, yes and no. Of course God still speaks to Christians today, He speaks to them through the Holy Spirit, convicting them, encouraging them and so forth.
But, no. God no longer speaks in the sense that He has nothing new to say.
Hebrews 1:1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
The point that the writer to the Hebrews goes on to make for 13 fantastic chapters, is that a final word has been spoken. There is nothing new to be said. Christ is the culmination of all that has been spoken before and nothing needs to be added.
But even if God were to speak again, what would He say? No-one could know, but what we do know is that it would not be in contradiction to what He has said before.
Numbers 23:19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
God is unchanging. That should be a source of comfort for us as Christians. A God that changes would place our salvation in jeopardy, a God that changes would not be trustworthy. But, on the contrary, back to the writer to the Hebrews, as he sums up his masterful 13 chapter argument..
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
But that’s not all. Go and check out the website for yourself and see the way that the case has been presented in a short promo video
There’s a church building with a pair of bouncers who turn away a gay couple, let in some nice middle class families, and then bans a number of people from different ethnic backgrounds.
The misrepresentation is appalling, but we’ve got used to it. One of the liberals’ key tools is to make us appear like rascists. In which case the Lord Jesus Christ was a “racist” because the same one who said,
John 12:32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
both statements of universal call
Matthew 19:4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”
Male and Female, the equivalent of Jesus being racist, according to the United Church of Christ. Perhaps someone should tell them.

I firmly believe in prophecy. Today.
However, we arent mormons . We dont believe in “progressive prophecy”. They believe that the new words can and usually override the the old ones. Example, their bible strictly adheres to polygomy and racism. Their ‘prophet’ decided (ahem, heard from God) that these thinds were no longer true.
As Christians we test prophecy against the word of God. Prophecy that contradicts the word is NOT A PROPHECY but a lie.
People like this use the “comma not a period” ideal in the wrong light. We STILL live in the times of revelation and some say we still live in the times of Acts, however, there is NO excuse for coming up with new ideas that oppose the word. The early part of Galations makes this one rather clear.
I wonder if they’d welcome me. Hehe.
The Intolerant cannot be tolerated!
Of course not. Which, in the long run, only reveals them for the hypocrites they are. They wouldn’t want me to be a part of their church if I were to tell them that homosexuality is sinful or that abortion is murder. They would want my beliefs and actions in regard to those issues to change. It’s the same thing in any orthodox church, except that we’re a bit more honest about wanting people to change.
Yet another pathetic attempt to rewrite scripture. Sigh.
God speaks today through the holy spirit and directs us, but
He doesn’t contradict Himself on what He’s said in the past.
I love their little video short – heh – propaganda at it’s best. :p
