Anglican TV – Child Abuse in the Diocese of Newcastle

A difficult episode of Anglican TV to record as we discuss the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse here in Australia.

Simply put, the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle dealt phenomenally badly with repeated allegations of abuse  of children made in the 1990s and 2000s. At the centre of these allegations sites the current Archbishop of Perth, Roger Herft, who was diocesan bishop at the time. Since recording this episode Herft has given evidence at the Commission (transcript not yet available at the time of writing). It is fair to say that his position does not look entirely secure now, given his lack of recollection of some key events and his apparent unresponsiveness to serious allegations made to him. The ABC have a good report on yesterday’s testimony by him.
