I agree with the affirmation argument that gay couples seek, with regard to marriage. I would extend that by saying that as the mainstream cultural/ecclesiastical institutions that are the CofE or the Catholic church, here in England, do not officially (yet!) allow same-sex couples to marry in their churches, then that will be seen by the gay community as an affront, a comment, a criticism of gay couples in general, their homosexual practices and even their marriage under the state. While such cultural institutions hold-out, they will be targeted, as opposition of any significant value has to be removed, lest it be given credence and authority and be seen as an acceptable, if historical, alternative to the new progressive orthodoxy of equality.
