there’s nothing worse than hypocrisy, except of course if it’s by a liberal episcopalian.

a while ago, thomb invaded this journal and posted all sorts of nastiness, then (naturally) deleted his comments. When people do that I like to browse their journals and see if I’m being a big jerk or if, to put it frankly, it’s more them than me.

So, it was with some incredulity that I read the following:

an observation
I have noticed all over the place this odd tendency of the right wing reactionaries in the church to mock the left. Itโ€™s really just that: sheer mockery. Itโ€™s not all they do by any means, but itโ€™s frequent. Itโ€™s a strategy. โ€œLook what idiots they are, ha ha ha.โ€

It works the same way racist jokes work, by snookering the hearer with humor, parody, and caricature, and then building a common sense that what is laughed at must be laughable.

If these folks were not so insanely destructive, it would not be so bad. But the problem is that this tool is deployed as one more tool with which to tell lies about people. Itโ€™s the standard, again, of racist humor: to mock, belittle, demean, and otherwise use humor as a strategy for subordinating another group of people.

By contrast, I hear little of this in my circles. I have never heard a mocking joke told about people on the right wing of the church.

OK. With it so far? Theological conservatives are nasty horrible people who mock, parody and caricature those that they disagree with. They are, basically, the equivalent of rascists. On the other hand, theological liberals are the salt of the earth who would never do anything so nasty in a million years.

Right? Of course! Who could argue otherwise? Still, let’s read on…

Iโ€™ve never heard anyone laugh when Jack Iker says his latest nonsense or Peter Akinola goes on another schismatic tantrum. Iโ€™ve never heard ridicule used as a means of disagreement, by those of us on the left.

Just a moment, I almost missed it in passing. Let’s read that again:

Iโ€™ve never heard anyone laugh when Jack Iker says his latest nonsense or Peter Akinola goes on another schismatic tantrum. Iโ€™ve never heard ridicule used as a means of disagreement, by those of us on the left.

Come on thomb, if you’re going to accuse those you disagree with of being so horrible at least have the awareness that posting that sort of thing in the same paragraph might not be the smartest way to make your point.

And, isn’t it ironic that the man that he mocks, parodies and caricatures is African? We’re the racist ones?

More of the same every day on

He seems to be invading journals all over, telling people how evil they are. I got to be a Donatist; I guess I wasn’t up to the mark of being a Pharisee.
