The Oboe

For a long time the oboe has been, without any doubt, my favourite orchestral instrument. Best used to float a piercing melody over the top of strings or other instruments. Here's some great examples.

La Calinda, Delius

“Miss Marple”, Ken Howard

Serenade for Winds; K361 3rd Movement, Mozart

The Duck from “Peter and the Wolf”, Prokofiev

Any more suggestions?

Good call, David, I love the oboe too. What about that Beethoven symphony, you know, where it goes da da da da, da dadi da da, is it no 3 or no 6? Sorry too lazy to find out, but that’s a good one.

Mind you oboes only do one sound, don’t they. It’s a great sound but once you’ve done it, you’ve done it.

Clone, you’re right – massive error on my part.

Gordo, I’m not sure which one you mean. I couldn’t tell which key your da da da was in.

Force me to work for it why don’t you! wink

OK well there is this one, the scherzo from the Eroica, but I wasn’t thinking of that:

And this one, Gabriel’s Oboe by Ennio Morricone is hauntingly beautiful

Ah, that’s the one! I knew it was a multiple of 3.
