The Oboe

For a long time the oboe has been, without any doubt, my favourite orchestral instrument. Best used to float a piercing melody over the top of strings or other instruments. Here's some great examples.

La Calinda, Delius

“Miss Marple”, Ken Howard

Serenade for Winds; K361 3rd Movement, Mozart

The Duck from “Peter and the Wolf”, Prokofiev

Any more suggestions?

  1. Good call, David, I love the oboe too. What about that Beethoven symphony, you know, where it goes da da da da, da dadi da da, is it no 3 or no 6? Sorry too lazy to find out, but that’s a good one.

Mind you oboes only do one sound, don’t they. It’s a great sound but once you’ve done it, you’ve done it.

  2. Clone, you’re right – massive error on my part.

Gordo, I’m not sure which one you mean. I couldn’t tell which key your da da da was in.
