The abortion debate, another example of liberal shutdown

I have very strong views on the abortion issue but I’ve also seen a lot of water go under the bridge so it’s rarely that I read something from the pro-choice lobby that suprises me. But this article by Emily Maguire in the Sydney Morning Herald is a demonstration par examplar of the attempt by the liberals to stifle the debate over the issue.

Take your time, read though it and see if you can spot the unsupported assertions, the simple inaccuracies and the flawed logic.
I’ll be commenting more in a few days but I’ve written to the smh letters page and I don’t want to prejudice my chances of getting printed. Either way you’ll read my letter in a few days ๐Ÿ™‚

“I don’t believe abortion is murder and the law agrees with me. If I’m wrong, if the law is wrong, then about a quarter of Australian women are murderers and millions of men and women are knowing accomplices.”

    A quarter?!?

      A quarter?!?

I know, one of many bizarre things she claims.

The statistical claim aside, this is a perfect example of “appeal to authority.” Abortion is legal therefore it is moral.

Recently Florida decided they wanted a pro-life license plate (see icon). The liberals in Florida are all upset because there isn’t a pro-choice alternative license plate. One of my friends suggested an alternative…

…so I thought this could work. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (see icon)

Mostly, Ms. Maguire doth protest too much. She accuses prolifers of hypocrisy for calling for other measures that ameliorate abortion’s effects (post-abortion depression counseling) and try to prevent them happening (pre-abortion options counseling), but not directly demanding an end to abortion itself. Really now. It is often the case in politics, being as it is the art of compromise, that “the perfect is the enemy of the good.” Would prolifers also be hypocrites for pushing a ban on third-trimester abortion but not on all abortion whatsoever? Would prochoicers be hypocrites for trying to legalize one procedure but not another more controversial, such as partial-birth?

Good luck. In my experience pro-choicers do not seem to listen to reason, at least not any sort of reason that I can understand.

Maybe it was an excuse to rid himself of a meddlesome priest.
