Jars of Clay

So, I was the preacher at chuch this last Sunday. And it all went a bit pear-shaped.
First, I was unable to print off my notes (don’t ask) and so I got my laptop into the pulpit with about 2minutes to spare. But, foolishly, I neglected to switch off the screensaver so, within 3 minutes of starting, it kicks in and my notes are lost below a slideshow of pictures of Charis.

For some reason the screensaver simply refused to stop and so I’m left with just a Bible (Phil 1:12-30) in front of me and my powerpoint presentation.

Except that the powerpoint won’t behave itself, either. My pointy/trigger thing failed and my boss ended up moving from slide to slide using the other computer keyboard.

Mind you, you knew it was going to go a bit shonky when Charis decided to wake up 3 times the previous night.

Nevertheless, people said nice things, I think some of them were even true.

2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

Or, in layman’s terms; we’re complete screwups so that if anything goes right for the gospel it’s obvious that it was God doing His stuff, not us.

I’m happy to report that everything was sorted out by evening church…

Call me a Luddite, but at least there’s less to go wrong with an OHP 🙂

Seriously though, it seems to me that those times when things do seem to go pear-shaped, from our pov, are often among the times that God is most at work. And, of course, although you may have lost your notes, that doesn’t undo the study you put in beforehand.
