Every so often

Every so often you come across something that is so morally repugnant that you can taste the vomit in your mouth.
Tomorrow evening, ABC Television, here in Australia, will be screening a documentary on Peter Singer, an Australian “philosopher” now working in the USA.

Now, I’m sure they’ll do a good job, I’m not here to say anything either way about ABC. The bad taste in my mouth is left by hearing about what Singer believes.

Simply put, this man believes that if you’re not productive you should die. Simple as that. So newborn babies aren’t much use and have to “prove” themselves.
Disabled? Make sure you never live in Singer’s world.
Old? Make sure you don’t grow old when Singer’s in charge.

And if you’re a disabled infant, just hope that Singer never influences those doctors who are in charge at your hospital. Here’s the view he advocates in the above piece,

When the death of a disabled infant will lead to the birth of another infant with better prospects of a happy life, the total amount of happiness will be greater if the disabled infant is killed. The loss of happy life for the first infant is outweighed by the gain of a happier life for the second. Therefore, if killing the haemophiliac infant has no adverse effect on others, it would, according to the total view, be right to kill him.

Leaves you kind of numb, doesn’t it?

"the total amount of happiness will be greater if the disabled infant is killed"

  1. Singer…I thought those views went out when Hitler was removed from power….the old enemy of humanity doesnt have anything new in the bag…only weapon is time and man’s desire to destroy themselves

  2. I’m slow to catch on…

Of course! Australia. I completely missed the hints: The way water goes down the drain in your location, your posting schedule’s being rather asynchronous to mine. I confess I’d even commented on your then-apparent lack of replies to me yesterday afternoon EDT… when it was the middle of the night in Australia, and you were likely asleep.

    Very sorry about that.

  3. Your baby is so beautiful! I wanted to tell you in a message in OJ, but since I’m not in the club anymore, I’m not allowed to post. Congratulations to the new parents. 🙂
