The intolerance of tolerance.

It’s amazing what can get you wound up.
Last night I was watching what was, until now, one of my favourite TV shows, Boston Public.
Why “until now”? Because once again intolerance raised it’s head.

The episode just screened here in Singapore, is episode 8 of the second series. Why does this raise my ire? Because of the way that reactions to homosexual behaviour are portrayed.

Here’s what the synopsis linked above says;

“Scott and Meredith’s relationship continues to progress only to find snag after snag. This week, Scott is finally confronted with Jeremy’s homosexuality. Scott decides not to inform Meredith about it, but when she finds out, she stops speaking to him and berates Jeremy. Scott confronts her finally and puts her in her place. He also begins establishing a relationship with Jeremy, having earned his trust by not interfering with his private life. In the meantime, Scott is also hampered by the homosexual content of the school play and for the fact that art funding for the school was cut in half because of the play’s content.”

Now, that is a far cry from the prejudice and misrepresentation that the show actually gave us.
The boy’s mother is distraught at the idea of her son being a practicing homoexual and this was repeatedly referred to as “homophobia”.
Next, she goes to the counsellor to have a chat about it where she is told that most homosexual orientation is “nature, not nurture”.
Nothing could be further from the truth, of course, but let’s not let the facts get in the way of a good piece of intolerance.

What we’re never shown, of course, is a godly Christian living out their opposition to this sort of thing in a gentle humble way. No, instead we always see reactionaries who are placed on a par with Hitler and Saddam Hussein.

but then some reality would spoil a decent plotline.

I realise that I will now be branded as a bigot by some of you. I’m sorry for that.
I hope, though, that some of you would continue to view me as and encourage me to be a godly Christian trying to live out their opposition to this sort of thing in a gentle and humble way.

Boston Public is thinly-veiled secular-leftist propaganda masquerading as serial drama. I picked up on that the very first time I watched it. The same can be said of a lot of what’s on TV in the US.

The writers can’t include the viewpoint of a Godly Christian in the show, because even if they wanted to do so, they can’t conceive what that viewpoint would be. If they have any friends who fit the bill (which is unlikely), they wouldn’t think to ask them. They’d stick in a stereotype instead.

      So…
I’m picking up that you don’t like the show…

    right there with ya

I used to love that show, too, and i remember that episode. I get so angry when i see things like that – and trust me, watching American tv, you see it ALL THE TIME. When someone is a “Christian”, they are constantly being depicted as close-minded hateful bigots.
    WE DO NOT HATE PEOPLE!!
We hate SIN! A TRUE Christian, who TRUELY loves Christ would show the same love to a homosxual that Jesus showed to prostitutes and tax collectors. Christ (aka GOD) loves EVERY human in creation, and would never treat someone the way that the media constantly says that “Christians” do.
I am right there with you. It is incorrect media like that (and people who call themselves Chistians, but do not make an effort to be a truely CHRIST-LIKE example to the world) that cause the rest of the world to hate Christ.
