on going to the Olympics

With the current terrible news from Tibet the question of whether athletes should attend the upcoming 2008 Olympics in Beijing is a pressing one.

Olympic Chief Rogge has spoken out:

Rogge said he had been “heartened” that major governments were “almost unanimously” against a boycott.

European sports ministers and Olympic committees earlier ruled out any boycott of the Games.

The European officials, meeting in Slovenia, said such political events should not be linked to sport.

Now I’m sorry - but that is utter nonsense. Why? For one simple reason:

The awarding of the 2008 Games to Beijing was, to a large extent, a political event. It was seen as an encouragement to China to get its act together. That has rather backfired now.
