It’s over for Huckabee

Romney has endorsed McCain.

Got to say that I’m disappointed with this sort of thing. Romney appears to have sacrificed his more conservative position for a shot at being the VP. Politically that’s a savvy maneuvre. McCain is getting on and might only serve one term (of course, he could easily serve 2).

But it’s also terribly frustrating. Here at the White Horse Inn we are all in support of Huckabee’s insistence that the Republican Party needs a contest, not a coronation. McCain vs Huckabee allowed Republicans to make a genuine choice between the centrist and more conservative wings of the party. Romney, however, has decided to cross over that divide and remove the opportunity for debate.

The Republicans should learn from us Anglicans. Papering over the cracks doesn’t promote unity, it just allows the crack to grow larger until one day the house falls down over its inhabitants.
