I had a regal wakeup call this morning. ABC can explain...

Sydney welcomes QE2
The Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise liner has docked in Sydney for the last time - 30 years to the day since the ship made its maiden voyage to the city.

The 70,000-tonne ship, which first visited Sydney on February 24, 1978, is berthed at Garden Island at Woolloomooloo.

Big crowds are expected in the CBD when the 40-year-old QE2 crosses paths with its sister ship, the Queen Victoria tonight.

The 90,000-tonne Queen Victoria docked in Sydney at around 7:00am AEDT yesterday after being welcomed into the harbour by a flotilla of smaller vessels.

The two ocean liners will pass on either side of Fort Denison this evening in what is being billed as an “historic royal rendezvous”.

The last time two large cruise ships met on Sydney Harbour there was chaos on the city’s roads as thousands of people came to see the historic event.

Cunard managing director Carol Marlow says the ships will blow their whistles as they pass each other.

The QE2 will go to Dubai later this year to be turned into a floating hotel.

What the ABC don’t tell you is that the QE2 let the whole of the Harbour know she’d arrived with a number of long hard blasts of the klaxon (or whatever you call that tooting sound) at 6am.

Or, put another way, I got woken up by the Queen this morning…
