Evil Giants

so we’re driving in the car, off to dinner, when Charis pipes up, “Papa, Giants are sinners, aren’t they?“
I’m not sure I"ve heard her right so I ask for clarification, “do you mean Giants are thinner, darling?“ (we’re having trouble with our “th"s at the moment - it was a reasonable thing to ask).
“No,

sin-ners

“ (with emphasis). “They’re naughty”. Followed by “silly” (which is what I get called every time I’m too thick to keep up with her and work out what’s going on).

I have to say, it took great composure not to swerve off the road in response to this great theological insight from a four and a half year old. I was stunned that my pre-schooler knew her Bible so well.

Obviously, she was telling me about that slightly obscure event in Genesis 6

Genesis 6:1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.“ 4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown…

The Nephilim are always there as the symbol of real evil. So, when the people of Israel are about enter the Promised Land after 40 years in the Wilderness…

Numbers 13:25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.“ 30 But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.“ 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.“ 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of

Anak

, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.“

Then, of course, there’s that great opponent of God’s people, Goliath…

1 Samuel 17:4 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of

Gath

, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Does his height alone make him Nephilim? Well no, but consider this…

Joshua 11:22 There was none of the

Anakim

left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in

Gath

, and in Ashdod did some remain…

So there I am, driving along and quite chuffed that my daughter shares my deep delight in Biblical trivia.

And then Charis provided an extra piece of information, just for clarification…

Giants are sinners. You know, like in Jack and the Beanstalk. He was really naughty…
